With all precincts reporting, Rep. Tom Emmer from Delano has won the SD 35 straw ballot. With 380 ballots cast, Emmer captures 53% (200) of the vote. Rep. Marty Seifert from Marshall came in second with 37% (140) of the votes. Senator David Hann from Eden Prairie took 6% (23) of the votes.
While participation across the Senate District was smaller than the caucuses of 2008, several of the 34 precincts had lively conversations around the future of the Republican Party. "Although we did not see as many people as the Presidential Election year, Republicans in my area shared that they were happy to see that they are not alone," said Chris Brovold of Elko New Market. Brovold added that some of the hot buttons were peoples frustration with a "lack of integrity" among politicians. This led to a great discussion about whether advocating for term limits for all elected offices should be added as a part of the GOP platform.
When discussing who attendees supported for governor, most came with an open mind and knew little about the differences between the two leading candidates. "They both sound conservative to me," shared one Shakopee Resident. "But I picked Seifert because his letter that was read sounded stronger."
"The excitement around getting involved was palpable last night," concluded Brad Johnson, SD 35 Chair.
